Strawberries – Local vs. imported vs. organic

A couple of the coworkers in my office made a great suggestion the other week – to do a taste test on local produce vs. imported vs. organic. There are a number of farmer’s markets in Toronto that take place during the summer months plus there is a big push to support locally grown produce.Continue reading “Strawberries – Local vs. imported vs. organic”

Salt substitutes – Can you break the salt habit?

There has been a lot of news in the media recently about sodium and how most people need to watch the amount of salt they have in their diet. It has been estimated that the average Canadian consumes 3,400 mg of sodium each day. This is well over the recommendations of no more than 2,300 mg of sodium each day (theContinue reading “Salt substitutes – Can you break the salt habit?”

Chicken bouillon – cubes, powder, gels or cartons: Is one better than the other? Or is it just personal preference?

A coworker of mine brought in a food product that has left me quite curious – Knorr Homestyle Stock: Chicken capsules. I’ve seen the powders, the bouillon cubes, even the liquid stock in cartons but this is the first time I’ve ever seen these concentrated stock capsules. They kind of look like applesauce snack packs.Continue reading “Chicken bouillon – cubes, powder, gels or cartons: Is one better than the other? Or is it just personal preference?”

Sugar vs. Sweetener…again – Blueberry muffins (Part 2)

Okay, I’ll admit it. I have extra sweetener sitting in my cupboards that I feel inclined to use up. I hate throwing away ingredients! So I figured I would do another sugar vs.sweetener taste test and again, bake blueberry muffins but turn the tables. I’m going to use a recipe that was developed with sugarContinue reading “Sugar vs. Sweetener…again – Blueberry muffins (Part 2)”

Custard: Powdered, canned or from scratch – Do they all taste the same?

Today’s cooking experiment involved three different forms of custard. Powdered, canned and from scratch. I must say, I am intrigued by all the different forms of custard that are on the market. There are powdered and canned forms available (and several brands of each kind I may add). Why even bother making it from scratch whenContinue reading “Custard: Powdered, canned or from scratch – Do they all taste the same?”

Sugar vs. Sweetener – Blueberry muffins

The sugar vs. sweetener debate continues. In a previous taste test, we tested out two artificial sweeteners – Splenda (sucralose) and Equal (aspartame) to see how they performed against sugar. We did the ultimate test which was to test these ingredients out on sugar cookies which I have to admit, was quite unforgiving. The biggestContinue reading “Sugar vs. Sweetener – Blueberry muffins”

Sugar vs. Sweetener – Would the real sugar cookie please stand up?

Okay, I have a confession to make – I originally only provided two out of the three cookie samples to the taste testers (both made with sweetener). The reason is because it was so-o-o-o-o obvious which of the cookies was made with sugar that the other two would have had no chance in terms ofContinue reading “Sugar vs. Sweetener – Would the real sugar cookie please stand up?”

Sugar vs. Sweetener – Would a sugar cookie by any other name taste as sweet?

Most of us have had the classic sugar cookie – whether it’s during the holidays or if we just want a fun cookie to cut out into shapes and decorate. However, would sugar cookies made with sugar substitutes instead of actual sugar taste as sweet? We’re about to find out. We used a classic sugarContinue reading “Sugar vs. Sweetener – Would a sugar cookie by any other name taste as sweet?”

Peanut butter alternatives

My coworker and I were interested in trying out the different peanut butter alternatives to see the kind of options that are out there for people who may be allergic to peanut butter. Especially now that many schools are declared ‘peanut free’ zones, it will be interesting to see what other options are available. HereContinue reading “Peanut butter alternatives”
